The Best $20 You'll Ever Spend On Room Acoustics

This is an old tweak that a good friend introduced me to long ago. I had forgotten about it, but with moving in to the new place, I remembered and decided to try it again. Boy was I glad I did.

Do yourself a favor and try this.

  1. Buy 15 or 20 feet of 6 awg solid core, bare copper wire at your favorite hardware store. Mine is Menards, and they conveniently sell 5' sections of copper for a little over $5 per section. It comes pre spiraled in a bag, and that will make it easier to make these.
  2. Make 6" spirals out of the 5 foot lengths of copper using your hands or with the help of a set of pliers. This may not be terribly important, what is important however is that the copper is allowed to resonate or ring. having a large, loose spiral seems to be an optimal shape.
  3. Place the spirals in the following manner:
    1. All spirals at ear level
    2. Two of the spirals will go behind and wider than the placement of your speakers, preferably in the corners of the room. If the corners are more than ten feet from the speakers you may want to move them in from the corners a bit but keep them close to the wall behind the speakers.
    3. The third spiral will be centered between the speakers and in line with the other two copper spirals. So you will have a row of 3 copper spirals behind your loudspeakers.

I hesitate to tell you the effects because I don't want to create an expectation bias. I will tell you in my system this was worth every penny.

Try it and let me know how it worked!
