Aurai Z 165 Loudspeaker
Aurai Z 165 Loudspeaker
In over 20 years in business, we have had the opportunity to listen to many speakers extensively. None have created such musical excitement and joy for us as Aurai loudspeakers. That's not promotional language. That's what happened when we ordered the Z165 after reading Srajan Ebaen's coverage at 6moons.
The Design
The Z 165 uses a full-range 6.5-inch driver with a whizzer cone — a coaxial secondary cone that extends the high-frequency response of the main driver without requiring a crossover or a separate tweeter. From approximately 80Hz upward, the Z 165 operates without a crossover. What that means for the music is the coherence and phase integrity that multi-driver speakers with crossovers fundamentally cannot achieve — the same reason single-driver designs have attracted serious listeners for decades despite their technical limitations.
Aurai's execution of this approach is not simple. The driver selection, voice coil geometry, cone materials, and cabinet design all work together to produce a speaker that doesn't sound like a compromise. The bass is extended and controlled. The midrange is present and dimensional. The top end extends further than the whizzer approach typically allows. And the coherence ties it all together.
Our Experience
We paired the Z 165 with tube amplification — the S6 Black Edition primarily — and found a combination that neither component achieves separately. The sensitivity is high enough that moderate power delivers genuinely loud listening levels. The low-frequency extension surprised us given the driver size. The midrange is what you buy these speakers for.
Press Recognition
6moons (Srajan Ebaen) reviewed Aurai speakers extensively and gave them exceptional marks for musicality and natural presentation. The coverage introduced Aurai to the English-language audiophile audience and led directly to us ordering a pair. It's worth reading before you decide.
