Innuos ZENith Next-Gen
The details in music — the breathiness in a voice, the vibration of a drum's skin, fingers sliding down a guitar neck — are present in the recording. Whether they reach your ears depends entirely on how cleanly and precisely the digital signal is delivered to your DAC. The ZENith Next-Gen is built around the conviction that this matters more than almost any other variable in a high-end system, and it pursues that goal with every engineering decision in the chassis.
The ARC6 power supply, trickled down from the STATEMENT Next-Gen. A Core i7 processor with eight physical cores. A pSLC OS SSD that generates less electrical noise than any standard drive. The PreciseAudio mainboard and Sense 3 with real-time kernel. Put together, these create a digital source where the music reveals itself with a transparency that starts to feel like presence in the room. That is what Innuos built this for.
The ARC6 NGaN power supply
Power supply quality determines the noise floor everything else operates from. The ZENith Next-Gen uses the ARC6 NGaN supply, a trickled-down version of the power architecture in the STATEMENT Next-Gen. At its foundation is a 300VA audio-grade transformer, significantly more substantial than what a standard server supply carries. Active rectification via the ARC6 board replaces conventional passive diode bridges with a faster, lower-noise rectification circuit that reduces the noise the supply introduces before regulation begins.
From there, a high-performance choke and over 130,000µF of Mundorf capacitors provide the reservoir. Mundorf is a German audio-grade component manufacturer whose capacitors appear in reference-level loudspeaker crossovers and amplifiers. In a power supply, the capacitor bank determines how much instantaneous current is available for transients — the moments in music where dynamic demand peaks. 130,000µF is a very large reservoir. The system does not compress during complex passages because the supply does not run out of current to give.
Gallium Nitride regulation then shapes that reservoir into the precise, ultra-low-noise voltages the digital circuitry requires. The combined result — active rectification, large reservoir, GaN regulation — delivers all the current the system needs with very low impedance, so every transient in the music reaches the output stage intact.
PreciseAudio mainboard
The PreciseAudio mainboard is an Innuos custom design built for one purpose: minimising the electrical noise and processor latency that a music server's circuitry generates. Enhanced power regulators and solid capacitors across the board reduce the electromagnetic environment the audio circuitry operates in. The layout, component selection, and power delivery are optimised for audio operation rather than general computing performance. This is the platform the music runs on.
Processing — Core i7 with AudioCore
An Intel Core i7 with eight physical cores provides the processing foundation. Innuos AudioCore dedicates specific physical cores entirely to audio processes, isolating them completely from background system tasks. With eight physical cores available, AudioCore has more dedicated resources than the ZEN Next-Gen's four-core i3 provides — the audio pathway receives more guaranteed, uncontested processing capacity. The remaining cores handle system operation. 16GB of industrial-grade low-noise DDR4 RAM supports responsive library management and streaming without the electrical noise that commercial memory modules generate.
The pSLC OS SSD
This is the detail that distinguishes the ZENith Next-Gen's OS storage from the ZEN Next-Gen's. The ZENith uses a pSLC — pseudo Single-Level Cell — industrial-grade SSD for the operating system. pSLC drives use simplified controllers compared to standard SSDs. Simplified controllers generate less EMI. Since the OS SSD carries the heaviest continuous system workload, reducing the electromagnetic interference it generates has a direct and measurable impact on the operating noise floor, and therefore on sound quality. The drive is independently powered and has power-loss protection for resilience. It is mounted directly on the PreciseAudio board, shortening the electrical path between the OS storage and the processor.
Sense 3 and the real-time kernel
Sense 3 with real-time kernel operates the same way across the ZEN and ZENith Next-Gen, with the ZENith's additional core count giving AudioCore more room to work. A real-time kernel removes the timing irregularities that a standard operating system introduces into audio playback by prioritising audio processes above everything else in the system. The music data leaves the ZENith Next-Gen as precisely timed as the hardware can produce.
Sense 3 handles the full listening experience: CD ripping with drive-head alignment for accurate rips, streaming via Qobuz, TIDAL (Connect and MAX resolution), Deezer, HighResAudio, and IDAGIO, a unified library combining local and NAS content with streaming catalogues, internet radio with Radio Paradise in CD-quality FLAC, Smart Mixes, collaborative playlists, and multiroom grouping. Controlled from the Innuos Sense app on iOS or Android.
Modular storage — up to 16TB
The ZENith Next-Gen's XSM Expandable Storage Management system supports up to 16TB of seamless internal storage: an internal NVMe PCIe drive up to 8TB and an externally accessible M.2 NVMe slot for a second drive up to 8TB. Sense manages the combined pool as a single library with intelligent data protection. The ZENith can be configured as a pure streamer with no internal drives, a music server with any storage capacity up to 16TB, or a Roon Core managing endpoints throughout a home.
Optional output modules
The ZENith Next-Gen's digital audio output slot accepts three optional boards, each optimising the connection to a specific DAC type:
- PhoenixUSB Board — regenerates and reclocks the USB signal with a 3ppb 24MHz OCXO clock. Ultra-low noise LT3045 linear regulators on each voltage rail. Clean 5V line to the DAC's USB input. The USB output performs at a level standard USB cannot reach.
- PhoenixI2S Board — direct I2S connection to compatible DAC chips via HDMI connector, bypassing conversion stages entirely. 3ppb 24MHz main clock plus two premium femtoclocks. Eight pin configurations for broad DAC compatibility. Supports up to DSD1024.
- SPDIF Board — coaxial, optical, and AES outputs for DACs that use traditional S/PDIF connections. PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz. Optimised power supply for ultra-low noise. Gold-plated connectors.
The chassis
10mm CNC-machined aluminium, bead-blasted and anodised. The transformer platform is vibration-dampened within the chassis. A Chassis Ground port connection is included. The enclosure is built to the standard the electronics inside require.
Where it fits
The ZENith Next-Gen sits at the top of Innuos's ZEN Series. It shares the PreciseAudio mainboard, Sense 3, and modular architecture with the ZEN Next-Gen, and brings those to a higher level through the ARC6 power supply, the Core i7 processor, and the pSLC OS SSD. The performance difference is real and is rooted in those three specific engineering advances.
Hi-Fi Knights reviewer Dawid Grzyb placed it clearly: "On the performance ladder it sits as high as the STATEMENT Next-Gen yet boasts even fancier exterior, takes less shelf space, is as polished on UI/UX and priced accordingly to what it does and how."
It pairs with the Next-Gen NET switch upstream for a complete Innuos network solution, and with the Next-Gen FLOW reclocker downstream to take the output stage further before the DAC.
