ModWright LS 300 balanced tube preamplifier — the ModWright reference. Dual-mono throughout, transformer-coupled inputs, tube rectification feeding separately regulated per-channel power supplies, fully differential signal path from input to output. Nothing shared between channels. The standard against which the LS 99 is measured.

ModWright LS 300 Balanced Tube Preamplifier

The LS 300 is the preamplifier that defines what ModWright considers possible. It is the fully resolved expression of Dan Wright's approach to balanced tube preamplifier design — dual mono construction, transformer-coupled inputs, tube rectification feeding separately regulated per-channel power supplies, and a fully differential signal path from input to output. Nothing is shared between the two channels except the chassis.

The Architecture

Transformer-coupled inputs — the component most associated with ModWright's reference-level sonic character. Transformers at the input provide galvanic isolation and the particular smooth, dimensional quality that transformer-coupled designs produce when implemented correctly. Tube rectification in the power supply — again, a design choice that contributes character as well as function. Separate regulated power supplies per channel, fed by that tube rectifier. Fully differential signal path throughout.

The result is a preamplifier that places everything in service of the music rather than the measurement sheet. Dan Wright's own comparison: the LS 99 delivers 95% of the LS 300 at nearly $5,000 less. That's an honest acknowledgment of what separates them and what doesn't.

Press Recognition

The ModWright LS 300 has been reviewed by The Absolute Sound and Stereophile as the reference-level expression of American tube preamplifier design from a designer with a three-decade track record of consistent engineering excellence.
