SteinMusic Ultra Acoustic Discs
SteinMusic Ultra Acoustic Discs
The wall behind your speakers shapes your soundstage, and the Ultra Acoustic Discs are SteinMusic's most refined way to tune it. Mounted behind and opposite the speakers, they open the soundstage for the music with finer gradations. SteinMusic says their significantly more complex construction makes the effect more nuanced: voices gain focus and the soundstage gains depth. They go up in minutes, with no modifications.
The same open room, with finer shades.
The Design
Each Ultra Acoustic Disc is 107 mm across, 33 mm high, and weighs about 300 g. Removable nano tape holds it flat to the wall and releases when you rotate the disc slowly. They're compact, unobtrusive, and blend into a living space, and you can add them one at a time up to six. They come in black, white, or beige, and all Acoustic Discs can be painted with spray paint without affecting performance.
What You Hear
SteinMusic says the space behind the speakers opens up, and the music detaches from the speakers and stands freely between them. Vocals gain a clearer position and more presence, and instruments are easier to distinguish. The soundstage becomes spatial and tangible, and with discs on the rear wall the sound fills the whole room, with a more organized overall picture and less harshness and blur. SteinMusic says the Ultra renders these changes with greater nuance, drawing finer distinctions between music and space. How pronounced the change is depends on your room, your system, and your speaker positions.
Three Versions Side by Side
- Acoustic Discs: 54 mm across, 9 mm high. SteinMusic says they give a good general mood and more clarity, and they go on the side walls, the ceiling, and next to the speakers, using 6 and 20 mm adhesive pads. They come in black or white.
- Super Acoustic Discs: 107 mm across, 12 mm high. Open space, focus, and depth, on the wall behind and opposite the speakers, with nano tape. They come in black or white.
- Ultra Acoustic Discs: 107 mm across, 33 mm high. Like the Super, but with more nuanced gradations, with nano tape, in black, white, or beige.
All three versions combine and complement each other because they work in different positions.
Tune It by Position
Height shapes the result. SteinMusic says mounting a disc higher opens the soundstage, and mounting it lower adds substance. You find the right spot by listening, and the nano tape makes experimenting easy.
- One disc: Center it on the wall behind the speakers between 120 and 180 cm high. A good starting point is 160 to 170 cm.
- Two discs: Place both on the wall behind the speakers, about 30 cm from each side wall, between 120 and 160 cm high. Start at 130 to 140 cm.
- Three discs: Combine both positions. The outer discs add openness and the middle disc adds focus and presence. Hang the outer discs symmetrically, at the same height and distance from the side walls, set their height first, then fine-tune with the middle disc.
- Back wall, center: Mirror the front center disc, but higher, about 30 to 40 cm below the ceiling. Height matters less here, and furniture can shape the placement.
- Rear wall, sides: Two more discs mirror the two outer discs on the front wall. With six discs, SteinMusic says the room comes much closer to a concert hall.
Installation
Three nano tape strips, each 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, come with the disc. A 2 x 3 cm piece is enough for testing, and for the final position SteinMusic recommends two to three pieces of 5 x 3 cm each. If furniture sits where you want a disc, it can lie on it, which sounds good, while standing upright against the wall usually sounds slightly more open.
Fine-Tuning and Hearing the Difference
Check first that the outer discs hang exactly symmetrically, at the same height and distance from the side walls. If the sound feels too bright or constricted, lower the disc slightly. If it feels dense or too controlled, raise it or take one disc away. SteinMusic says the key is balance in the room, since more discs aren't automatically better.
To hear what the discs do, pick three recordings you know well: a voice, an acoustic instrument, and a larger ensemble. Listen to them at the same volume before you mount the discs, then again over a few days. Then take the discs down for one evening. SteinMusic says the difference is often more noticeable when you remove them than when you mount them.
Where It Fits
The Ultra Acoustic Discs work with the rest of SteinMusic's room acoustics. They're compatible with the original Acoustic Discs, the H2 system (H2, H-Pro, and H1), Acoustic Suns, and Acoustic Diamonds, and everything you've already installed stays in place. Use the same version in symmetrical positions, for example Ultra discs at front left and right and rear left and right, with Super discs at the front and rear center. We're happy to help you plan the positions for your room.
